A Comprehensive Guide to System Design

what is systems design

The UCS B-Series and C-Series each bring distinct advantages in terms of integration, computing density, and flexible scalability, while the S-Series specializes in high-density storage capabilities. The HyperFlex HX-Series advances the convergence of compute, storage, and networking, streamlining data center operations and energy consumption. Finally, the UCS X-Series represents the pinnacle of modularity and future-proof design, delivering unparalleled flexibility to dynamically meet the shifting demands of enterprise workloads. By doing so, it reduces the need for separate storage and compute layers, leading to potentially lower power and cooling requirements. In the highly dynamic and ever-evolving world of enterprise computing, data centers serve as the backbones of operations, driving the need for powerful, scalable, and energy-efficient server solutions. This makes it a cinch to implement on a website, saving development time.

Basics of Outsourcing to a Mobile App Development Agency

Systems Design is the process of defining the architecture, components, modules, interfaces, and data for a system to satisfy specified requirements. It involves translating user requirements into a detailed blueprint that guides the implementation phase. The goal is to create a well-organized and efficient structure that meets the intended purpose while considering factors like scalability, maintainability, and performance. Operating systems, such as Windows, macOS, and Linux, are complex software systems designed to manage computer hardware resources and provide an interface for users and applications. System design is vital in defining the architecture, components, and functionalities of operating systems. Low-level design in system design is equally important as it delves into the detailed implementation of the system components outlined in the high-level design.

In some instances, it can also include things such as a rough sketch or mind-draft of the intended design, market sizing, competitor and positioning analysis, and a design analysis. This website is using a security service to protect itself from online attacks. There are several actions that could trigger this block including submitting a certain word or phrase, a SQL command or malformed data.

These modules can be independently developed, deployed, and maintained. The physical design relates to the actual input and output processes of the system. Data Flow Diagrams or DFDs is defined as a graphical representation of the flow of data through information. DFD is designed to show how a system is divided into smaller portions and to highlight the flow of data between these parts. With the increase in tech usage, be it offline or online, it is now a must for every developer to design and create a scalable system.

What kind of Experience do you want to share?

Once the definition of “primary-color” changes, the design automatically gets updated. Content guidelines dictate the tone, style, and language of textual content. Google's Material Design is an example of a consistent design system. It consists of different types of elements and guidance on when and how to use each element. We all want to keep our customers and visitors happy, but it is significantly important to keep your designers and developers content too. A design system could collaboratively speed up their productivity.

The product launch process is a coordinated effort to bring new products to market. Because there are so many moving parts, this process can introduce new risks not seen in the product at this stage. Thorough planning is especially required particularly for companies that have to meet certification requirements such as DO178 and ISO standards. The four primary stages of verification and validation, starting from the earliest and moving closer to mass production, are Prototype, EVT, DVT and PVT.

This means that even after production, a team of engineers is monitoring the functioning of the system, determining improvements to make, then building, testing and merging updates. The firmware is a set of basic computer program and very low-level instructions that control that core behavior of the hardware and its interactions with other higher level software. Firmware is typically written using low level programming languages such as C, C++ and C#. Common IDEs for firmware developers include Eclipse, Geany, emacs and Visual Studio and more.

Questions related to Design Systems

what is systems design

When designing a complex system, you may want to implement RAID storage techniques. Block storage is a data storage technique where data is broken down into blocks of equal sizes, and each individual block is given a unique identifier for easy accessibility. As opposed to adhering to a fixed path, blocks can be stored anywhere in the system, making more efficient use of the resources. Because of its increasing importance, we wanted to create a resource to help you navigate the world of system design.

System design is the backbone of software engineering, shaping the way applications function, scale, and deliver value to users. Learning system design empowers software engineers to craft innovative, reliable, and efficient solutions that drive the digital world forward. Even when using modern, best in class, design mockup and prototyping tools, important details are inevitably lost. UX and UI designers are, by trade, not developers, meaning certain technical aspects will not be considered in the design.

Together, we’ll initiate the process of crafting a design system right from its inception in Figma. Think of this as a streamlined and efficient design system cheat sheet, making the entire journey straightforward and swift. Similar to ML technologies, containerization technologies are also growing in popularity and are becoming more widespread across various industries.

To shard your data, you need to determine a sharding key to partition your data. The sharding key can either be an indexed field or indexed compound fields that exist in every document in the collection. To maintain the integrity of a database, all transactions must obey ACID properties. ACID is an acronym that stands for atomicity, consistency, isolation, and durability. A quorum is the minimum number of servers on which a distributed operation needs to be performed successfully before declaring the operation’s overall success.

Some might argue we should just use the first of the two words in the above word-pair examples. That’s a start, however, there is something we still seek to communicate when we default to the word system in our speech and writing. This article is an important resource if you’re new to system design and aiming for interviews at top tech companies. It breaks down system design concepts into easy-to-understand steps, starting from the basics and gradually advancing to more complex topics. By the end, you’ll be equipped with the knowledge and confidence to tackle any system design questions in interviews and excel in your new role.

Testing is vital for ensuring your design system provides the tools, guidance, components, and support teams need to deliver high-quality products efficiently. Design system testing assesses every aspect of the component library, documentation, syntax, accessibility, and more to ensure it meets the organization’s standards and expectations. Ant Design System is a design system that provides guidelines for how to create user interfaces that are consistent, accessible, and scalable. It is based on the principles of Atlassian, which is a set of design principles that are used to create user interfaces that are simple, efficient, and user-centered.

The size and complexity of a database schema depend on the size of the project. The visual style of database schemas allows you to properly structure your database and its relationships before jumping into the code. The process of planning a database design is called data modeling. Database schemas are abstract designs that represent the storage of the data in a database. They describe the organization of data and the relationships between tables in a given database. You plan database schemas in advance so you know what components are necessary and how they’ll connect to each other.

If you’re considering adding one to your life as a pet, understanding their care, lifespan, diet, and size is essential to ensure a healthy and happy companion. There you have it, all you need to know about the common house gecko (well almost). So what will you do the next time you see one in your home? Hopefully, you’ll choose to live with it and let it take care of pest control. Once you get past the creepy skin, the common house gecko actually makes for a good pet.

Is The Mediterranean House Gecko Poisonous?

Once fully grown they measure just four to five inches (10 to 13 cm) from snout to tail. They are either gray or brown, with pink or purple undertones and dark mottling. This species looks very similar to a Common Gecko, but you can tell the difference by a Mediterranean’s bumpy skin and translucent underbelly. Females lay several clutches of two eggs during the summer. Eggs may be laid in crevices, under bark, in soil or other protected locations.

Lifespan and Health

But it’s best to avoid that issue altogether by keeping the geckos stress-free. You can use a reptile-safe disinfectant or a 10-percent bleach and water mixture to keep the bacteria under control. To prevent them from occurring, stay on top of tank conditions. Keep a hygrometer and thermometer in the tank so that you can ensure conditions are in the proper range. Stability is key when caring for any reptile, so avoid major fluctuations. Take your lizard to a vet specializing in exotic animals if you think that you’re dealing with an infection.

Keeping Common House Geckos as Pets

A slight drop in temperature at night mimics their natural habitat, contributing to their overall well-being. Handling these geckos requires a gentle touch, as they are delicate creatures. Regular, gentle handling encourages them to become more accustomed to human interaction, enhancing the bond between pet and owner. However, it’s essential to allow them time to acclimate to their new environment and handle them with care to prevent any potential stress or harm. Females do get along with others so if you want a group of geckos, make sure you only have one male in your enclosure to avoid fighting.

Interaction with Humans

These rituals can include vocalizations, head bobbing, tail wagging, and physical touch. The male may also engage in chasing or biting behavior to assert his dominance and demonstrate his suitability as a mate. They can get territorial, making squeaking sounds to ward off potential invaders.

Larger lizards can exceed five inches (barely), but they never get bigger than that. The UVB bulb should be housed in a reflective fixture and placed close to the heat lamp. UVB is blocked by glass and plastic, so you can’t give your gecko UVB by placing its terrarium in front of an open window. UVB bulbs decay over time, so expect to replace your bulb every 12 months.

What basking temperatures do house geckos need?

A submissive gecko will retreat or freeze, while an aggressor will snap its mouth, lunge or bite. In displays of dominance, two geckos will face off and squeak – this is common in males. They do not need full spectrum lighting, but make sure they have a 12hr day and night cycle. The Mediterranean gecko will drop its tail if it feels threatened. Their tail holds important fat reserves though, so try not to stress your Gecko. If your pet does drop their tail make sure they have lots of food and are comfortable as it grows back.

Habitat and diet

We hope you found this guide useful and consider getting this species as a pet. If you have any questions that we didn’t address above, send them our way and we’ll be happy to help. In most cases, they come from unsanitary living conditions. Still, include a bowl that’s large enough for the gecko to get in.

However, they occasionally find themselves here via imported plants from Hawaii. You’re likely to find Western Banded Geckos around rocks or debris, which they use for cover when they are above ground. By being nocturnal and spending much of their time underground, they can withstand their habitat’s lack of rain and intense heat.

In addition, geckos can become an invasive species in the local area if they get out and survive the local temperatures. Ensuring the health and wellness of your Common House Gecko is paramount for a fulfilling and joyful companionship. Regular health check-ups, a balanced diet, and a comfortable living environment contribute significantly to your gecko’s overall well-being. House geckos need a moderate to high humidity level in their enclosure so aim for 60 to 75 percent relative humidity which you can measure with a hygrometer. Most commonly, this species is found in the continental US as an escaped pet.

Their nocturnal lifestyle is well-suited to their hunting behavior, as many of their prey, such as insects and spiders, are also active during the night. House geckos use their keen senses of sight and smell to locate their prey in the darkness. They rely on stealth and patience to stalk and capture their food, often waiting for the opportune moment to strike with their sticky tongues.

If you have more than one gecko, provide two sleeping areas so that they have the choice to be apart. Being informed about the legal and ethical considerations of keeping a Common House Gecko is essential for responsible pet ownership. Ensure that you are aware of any permits, restrictions, or regulations pertaining to the ownership and care of reptiles in your area. For those interested in the breeding aspect of reptile husbandry, Common House Geckos offer an intriguing opportunity. Before embarking on the breeding journey, it’s essential to be well-prepared and informed about the process, ensuring the health and safety of both the parent geckos and the offspring.

House geckos are nocturnal, so supplemental UVB lighting isn’t essential. Ensure 12 hours of light and 12 hours of darkness to mimic their natural environment. Mediterranean house geckos thrive in temperatures between 65° to 90°F (18°-32°C). To achieve this gradient, use a heat mat or ceramic heat emitter on one side of the enclosure. Always use a thermometer to monitor the temperature throughout the habitat, ensuring a suitable gradient. Native to the Mediterranean region, these reptiles have made their way to various parts of the world, earning the name Turkish gecko and moon lizard.

Seek out an exotic animal veterinarian who specializes in reptiles and especially lizards. Most geckos will recover from these maladies if they are treated in the early stages. Crickets can make up the main part of their diet with the addition of fruit flies and other small flies, silkworms, the occasional mealworm, and other insects. Gut load the prey prior to feeding a gecko; dust the prey with a calcium supplement two to three times a week, and a dusting of a multivitamin once a week. The Leaf-Toed Gecko is only found in rocky terrain in far southern California.

House Gecko Health Problems

Its vocalizations range from quiet peeps to rapid short squeaking sounds. They may be heard most easily on a quiet night when they are sitting near an open window. When removing the gecko from the enclosure, have a firm grip from the top and support their bottom.

How much space do house geckos need?

A growing gecko has a healthy appetite and usually needs feeding daily, while adult geckos should be fed 3-4 times a week. Due to this level of dependence on the environment, drops in temperature may act as a leading indicator for reduced gecko sightings in the medium term. Acute weather events such as rain or wind will result in acute decreases in Gecko sightings within that environment. It is unsure what impact these phenomena may have on the long term on distribution and the capacity of the common house gecko to compete with other gecko species.

Mediterranean House Gecko Species Information and Facts

Reptile carpets can work as well, but you’ll need to clean them quite frequently. You don’t need a massive terrarium to keep a Mediterranean house gecko. If you have fresh hatchlings, you can use a five-gallon tank.

Q: Do house geckos eat dead insects?

To provide a realistic representation of the natural environment, the lamp should be programmed to drop the temperature inside the enclosure to around 72°F at night. The enclosure should mimic their natural habitat to make them feel at home. Ensuring that the tank is secure and escape-proof is also essential, given the gecko’s adept climbing abilities. A well-structured enclosure not only provides a safe environment but also enhances the opportunity to observe the natural behaviors and climbing antics of these fascinating reptiles.

House geckos should have a basking temperature of around 90°F, as measured by a digital probe thermometer with the probe placed on the basking surface. In order to allow for proper thermoregulation, the enclosure should also have a cool area that stays between 75-85°F. Although the house gecko may look like a simple creature, you’ll have to make sure you know as much about them as you can – particularly how to keep them as pets. House gecko eggs have a soft, leathery shell that provides protection while allowing for gas exchange during incubation. The number of eggs laid can vary depending on factors such as the female’s age, size, and environmental conditions. If your Mediterranean house gecko shows any signs of discomfort, gently put them back into the enclosure.

Droppings can stain carpets, rugs, walls, curtains and other object within the home. By offering your gecko a varied diet, meeting their nutritional requirements, and maintaining an appropriate feeding schedule, you’ll ensure they remain healthy and happy in your care. It’s also crucial to dust the insects with calcium powder, as geckos require calcium for proper bone health. You might want to use supplements containing vitamin D3 as well, especially if your gecko doesn’t have access to natural sunlight or a UVB light source. You will also need calcium and vitamin supplements to help keep your gecko healthy. We recommend Repashy Calcium Plus LoD, lightly dusted on all feeder insects.

As a responsible pet owner, you should strive to provide an optimal environment to ensure your gecko lives a long and healthy life. Technically they can live without it, but we still recommend using it for house geckos. UVB lighting helps provide a clear day/night cycle, provides all of the vitamin D that your pet needs, strengthens the immune system, facilitates better digestion, and other benefits. House geckos typically range in size from three to six inches in length, with variations among different species and individuals. They have slender bodies, large eyes, and flattened heads, giving them a distinctive appearance.

Feeding your gecko insects caught in the wild will help provide a more balanced diet as their guts will contain many varied nutrients that farm raised crickets will not. If you wish, put in some small potted plants and keep them well watered. This will aid in keeping the humidity high in the tank as well as provide a more natural setting for your gecko. Using potted plants makes it easier to remove them for your frequent tank cleaning.

When it comes to the animals we live with (seen and unseen), it is important that we get to understand the role they play in the ecosystem. You’ll be surprised to find that some even play a helpful role around your house. Place a clean branch, a rock or two, and perhaps a piece of tree bark in the tank. Geckos love to hide on the underside of branches or chunks of bark during the day while they sleep. They also love to climb on rocks to bask as well as enjoy the stored heat. These small geckos grow to three to six inches in length and live about five years.

Lights should be on for 14 hours/day during summer and 10 hours/day during winter to simulate natural seasonal patterns. After mating the female may retain sperm for up to 12 months which allows them to continue producing eggs. This has been keen to their spread around the globe as only one female is needed to establish a population. They have proven highly adaptable and are often seen in urban areas living within buildings.

In the wild, they eat everything from moths to cockroaches. You can mix things up by rotating between roaches, worms, and crickets in captivity. Mealworms and other popular insect-based reptile foods work, too. If you want to provide the optimal habitat, a 20-gallon terrarium is a fantastic choice. Go for a vertically oriented model to allow for plenty of climbing opportunities.

It should be a multivitamin that contains calcium to meet all their nutritional needs. The humidity level in their enclosure should be between 60 and 75 percent at all times. It’s a good idea to invest in a hygrometer that you can monitor around the clock.

Serifs anchored words onto the page and made them easier to read. In the earlier days of the web, serifs were shunned by web designers because lower screen resolutions diluted them. Now that screens are better optimized for typography with serifs, they’ve made a comeback. Most people will read through something like a blog post in this F-pattern.

21 Modern & Contemporary Exterior House Design Ideas

modern and luxury home design

In a city renowned for its glamor and extravagance, luxury living reaches new heights, enticing potential homebuyers with an array of exquisite features that redefine modern sophistication. If you’re thinking about moving to the city and you’re in the market to buy a luxury home in Los Angeles, you’ll find this city offers a wealth of luxurious properties that seamlessly blend elegance, comfort, and functionality. If you have a house design with a conventional roof of pitched and gable roofs, you have two options. The easiest option (although definitely the very least effective) is keeping the standard roof profile and see if there are some other methods to modernize the appearance of your home exterior. The alternative option is usually to re-design the roof, so it’s a far more modern roof design.

The Westwood neighborhood is a large neighborhood in west Los Angeles, with Brentwood in the west and the Los Angeles Country Club in the east making up two of the neighborhood's borders. Westwood is zoned for commercial and residential, so it has a world-famous shopping district in a centrally located sub-neighborhood known as Westwood Village. Modern style homes are abundant in Westwood and more accessible price-wise than some homes in the more luxurious Hollywood Hills neighborhoods. The homes feature all the best stylistic distinctions of the modern style, including blended interior and exterior spaces, asymmetrical rooflines, and tons of natural light. Upon entering the home, the owners experience an abundance of natural light from an open foyer that features a staircase flanked by a wall of large windows.

You can usually identify these homes with contemporary highlights by looking for stone or maybe wood exterior materials, insignificant ornamentation, and molded taller windows. The outside design of these houses adopts a modern approach, and arranging is generally used to create the control intrigue of the house since the look is very moderate. Its exterior showcases clean lines, with a mix of materials such as glass, metal, and wood creating a dynamic facade. As you step inside, you’re welcomed by an open floor plan, emphasizing spaciousness and fluidity.

Would you have to utilize the standard K-style gutter or would a half-round or A-style gutter profile work? Think about how can you streamline the style of the roof venting at the eaves? Also, work to simplify the home exterior, like window trim, as much as you can. Do you want a ranch-style home that blends modern and rural aesthetics? The ranch house has been given a sleek new facelift to bring it up to date.

Contemporary and Minimalist Luxury

From luxurious finishes to extravagant furnishings, every element is carefully curated to evoke a sense of opulence and sophistication. The key to luxury home design is to create a space that reflects your style while incorporating timeless elegance and tasteful extravagance. With an emphasis on high-quality materials, modern luxury interior design thrives in a well-appointed kitchen. Use materials such as quartz kitchen countertops, stainless steel appliances, and solid brass fixtures.

Incorporate technology into luxury home design by incorporating smart home systems, automated lighting and window treatments, state-of-the-art entertainment systems, integrated sound systems, and energy-efficient solutions. Seamless integration of technology ensures a luxurious and convenient lifestyle. Incorporate minimalist fireplaces with linear designs and natural elements. Choose sleek gas or electric fireplaces that become focal points without overpowering the space. Surround them with minimalist mantels or natural stone for a contemporary touch. It's no surprise that floor-to-ceiling windows, as seen in this $13 million Los Angeles home, tops the list.

In Argentina, this brutalist-style concrete house design places a gray monolithic mass on the green landscape. Rustic stone walls periodically break the concrete lines, adding texture and interest. The streets in Holmby Hills are incredibly narrow, which is common in many neighborhoods in Hollywood Hills. There are no commercial shops or restaurants in the neighborhood, either. Holmby Hills residents love to travel south into Beverly Hills for shopping or work.

However, the terms Modern and Mid Century Modern refer to historical periods whereas Contemporary describes the style of homes built today. Mid Century Modern residential architecture has common characteristics that help achieve goals of simplicity, modernity, and a connection to the natural world. Reacting to old ways of thinking about the world, Modernists rejected the strict moral codes and stuffiness of the Victorian Period.

For instance, the show kitchen is designed as a stage for the visiting private chef. “The extension of the sense of volume in the kitchen with a mirrored ceiling creates a spectacle and experience that is unique to the space,” Tan highlighted. In the 1940s and ’50s, midcentury-modern design, with its clean lines, warm woods, and bold upholstery hues (often in woolly, menswear-inspired textures), changed the way homes looked. Suddenly, less was more, and decorating a home was about finding a design where form served function—a philosophy that continues to inspire designers to this day.

Homes in Venice exude eclectic charm, ranging from beachside villas to contemporary designs, often featuring modern amenities, open layouts, and outdoor spaces. Artistic flair, diverse architecture, and a vibrant community atmosphere define Venice’s unique residential landscape. We’ve seen plenty of homeowners emphasize their fashionable home design and take full advantage of their living room. Effectively, to separate the typical assumption, the contemporary design is really beginning from the outside. If your house features a contemporary appearance on the interior, but not on the exterior, consequently, there is no continuity. You are able to see examples of luxury stylish contemporary appearance on our list for ideas.

Make it a little more complicated and think about meeting your twin fourteen years after you thought you had no siblings in the first place.

Brand design: Everything you need to create a strong brand identity

branded design

The importance of developing an effective brand strategy can not be understated - it helps attract new customers, strengthens customer loyalty, and creates a strong foundation for moving forward. Your messaging should be tailored to the brand's target audience and should reflect the brand's core values and personality in order to make a lasting impression. By the end of this guide, you should have a clear understanding of what it takes to create a strong brand that resonates with your target audience and stands out from the competition. You can create your brand style guide in a format you prefer, or whichever is easier to share with your team. Most brands prefer creating a PDF document, and using both digital and printed versions of it.

Additional Brand Elements

Diet foods for ketogenic or other brand name diets can also be unique. Your brand should stand out from your competitor in terms of value, performance, packaging, and other aspects. It will help customers value your brand, trust you, and buy your products. In your position statement, you can include what factors make your product unique. You’ll need to make sure that the difference is true (you didn’t make it up), valuable (your customer is willing to pay for it), and provable (you can verify your claims). You’ll want to develop a pricing strategy that is profitable for your company yet competitive in your market.

What are the benefits of a branded environment?

Both are best used with restraint, in subtle feedback for microinteractions, for example, rather than to induce delight or entertain users. It’s key to remember that textures and patterns are supporting elements. They should enhance the message you wish to convey, never distract from it.

The service or product purpose should be at the heart of this exercise. It should speak to customers and evoke an immediate image of what the brand is and does. Furthermore, to testify for the branding expert in the selected business industry, they should transparently demonstrate their skills. Where the primary evidence will be the number of satisfied consumers they have served.

These design elements add individuality, context, and uniqueness to your brand. It’s important to consider how colors appeal to your target audience. Baby boomers prefer neutrals and trustworthy classics, while Gen X gravitates toward basics with organic touches.

Want Actionable Brand Strategy Tips & Techniques?

From your logo and color scheme to your typography and photography, each element should be created as an integral component to the unified aesthetic system that is your brand’s visual identity. Brand design is the process of crafting visual identity, your brand’s signature look and feel that is instantly recognizable in a crowded market landscape. To create a visual identity that refuses to be ignored, you need strategic, intentional brand design. You have to take branding seriously from day one and keep it at the top of your mind through every success and failure that your business goes through. If we look at the traditional definition, a brand is an idea, name, symbol or any other feature that identifies a product or service and differentiates it from the competition. Branding is the process of giving a product or service the power of a brand. Having lived and studied in London and Berlin, I'm back in native Serbia, working remotely and writing short stories and plays in my free time. With previous experience in the nonprofit sector, I'm currently writing about the universal language of good graphic design. When it comes to logo design, there are several types of logos that you might consider.

This is why you’ll often find premier branded residences in some of the most prestigious addresses in major city markets like London, New York or Hong Kong. Colors used in your branding have psychological associations that influence people’s perceptions of your brand. Select colors that align with and enhance your desired brand personality. Your logo is the cornerstone of brand recognition and should communicate your brand in a memorable way. An effective logo design is simple, distinctive, versatile, and appropriate for your company.

From breaking down complex processes in infographics to cute motion designs that improve your website’s user experience - the possibilities for using illustrations are truly vast. However, remember that there are many different styles, and not all will make a good fit (e.g. think about minimalistic, isometric illustrations and retro watercolors). Of course, it goes without saying that a professional brand guide should include exact color codes, so that anyone creating designs for your company can achieve the exact brand look you’re after. Like every other part of branding design, packaging is supposed to enforce your brand identity and build awareness.

Though a logo design alone is sufficient for smaller companies, a successful brand design will create a solid look throughout your business while constituting your brand values. In addition to a brand logo design, brand design can include marketing materials, websites, and even the business space. Princess Cruise Ports: San Francisco, CA

princess cruise terminal san francisco

FYI … I’ve been cruising out of SF since the old Sky Princess was here. I remember day we embarked at Pier 27, when the Blue Angels would be flying. I live in SF & if you’re able to arrive early there is usually a short line into the terminal. We are approximately a 7-8 block walk to Pier 35; this is about minute walk. Combine a cruise + train + lodge + Denali for an in-depth Alaska experience. From exploring Denali National Park to fishing for salmon in Anchorage, discover the top Alaska destinations on a Princess cruise.

Inside Passage Alaska Cruise

If just calling, Pier 35 is better because it's closer to the Pier 39/Fisherman's Wharf tourist area. If doing a full turn, it doesn't help that you get dropped off at on the sidewalk, unlike Pier 27 where there's actually a staged pick-up/drop-off area. Port of SF can really only handle one ship at a time because of the Embarcadero--not really designed to handle a lot of traffic. Double check the cruise ship schedule and make sure there aren't 2 ships doing full turns on your embarkation day. If there are, plan on arriving earlier rather than later because of the traffic on the Embarcadero this causes. Experienced this in Oct '23 when the Royal Princess and Ruby Princess were in town doing full turns on the same day.

With the sunset as your backdrop, conclude your trip with a traditional luau. For 2018 were scheduled a total of 82 ship calls and estimated ~300,000 passengers. The only ship Princess homeported to SF is the Crown Princess for Fall/Winter '23 (up until the end of Sept '24). The Ruby Princess moving to Fort Lauderdale at the end of '23 Alaska season out of SF. There's still a chance that the Crown Princess will be assigned Pier 27. I was just on a cruise in November/December & most things went smoothly.

Guests can opt for nearby parking options like Harbor Court or Aloha Tower Marketplace, though accessing the Cruise Terminal might necessitate a taxi, particularly for those with large suitcases. Please note that these parking services are independent of Princess Cruises and the Port of Honolulu. I now always look at the port schedule and won’t ever book a cruise whose embarkation is at pier 35! I don’t think Princess will make that mistake again as they got so many complaints about it. We went in April last year and we joined about 11am and there was no line. Following week when we got off, we had a bit of hanging round to do as our flight was later and didnt want to go straight to the airport. We saw around lunch time the line started to form, but people was getting moved quickly enough. They was very quick to take your luggage from you which was nice, and it seems pretty organised.

The 6 Best Cruises for Northern Lights Viewing

cruise for northern lights

As you embark from these ports, the promise of the dancing Northern Lights on the horizon adds to the allure of the Great White North’s vast and varied landscapes. Beyond the Northern Lights, cruises often sail to exotic polar destinations, offering a comprehensive experience. The huge Beerenberg volcano is the world’s northernmost active volcano, last erupting in 1985. The northern part of the island is a great place to look for whales and dolphins, and contains impressive glaciers, some of which reach the sea.

Why Join a Northern Lights Cruise with Aurora Expeditions?

You’ll sail past natural wonders and beautiful medieval towns as well as spotting reindeer and huskies while you step out to hopefully view the Northern Lights, with a base in a cosy cabin and enjoying delicious regional meals. Some local initiatives protesting against cruise travel have also gathered momentum, so cruisers should be aware of these issues before setting foot ashore. Layered clothing accommodates the region's variable weather, while specialized gear might be necessary for specific excursions. Scandinavia—and Norway in particular—is an expensive place to travel around, so a cruise can make financial sense for those seeking an introduction to the region. For one price, you get your travel, accommodation, meals, and entertainment covered. If you’ve ever wanted to dive into the culture of the Vikings or explore what makes people in the Nordic region the so-called happiest on earth, you could do a lot worse than book a Scandinavian cruise.

More from The Times and The Sunday Times

The optimal time to witness the Northern Lights during Aurora Expeditions’ cruises and expeditions is typically during the winter months when the polar night prevails. This period, from late September to early April, offers extended darkness and clearer skies, enhancing the visibility of the Aurora Borealis. The absence of sunlight allows passengers to fully immerse themselves in the captivating light displays against the Arctic or sub-Arctic landscapes. Aurora Expeditions carefully schedules these voyages to coincide with peak Northern Lights activity, ensuring passengers have the best chances of experiencing this celestial spectacle in its full splendour. Dedicated trips in search of the aurora borealis include a 13-night round-trip expedition cruise from Amsterdam on MS Maud.

Viking River Cruises

It features a day on Senja, one of the most ruggedly beautiful and lesser-visited Norwegian islands. Considering the cruise line is named after the atmospheric phenomenon, it should come as no surprise that it offers a northern lights itinerary. At 19 to 22 days long, depending on the departure, there is plenty of time to hope for a northern lights appearance — or two, or three, or more. The longer itinerary continues with a visit to the Faroe Islands and disembarkation in Bergen, Norway. Shorter days in the high latitudes means darkening evening skies, so on this voyage we stay close to the coastlines of the Arctic Circle, skirting around the Norwegian and Greenland seas, and exploring remote islands and villages of the region. This spectacular natural phenomenon offers a surreal light display as vibrant hues of blue, green, pink and violet dance across the night sky.

Hurtigruten is something of an outlier in this group because it doesn't offer specific northern lights itineraries. But the routes of this coastal ferry company in Norway just happen to traverse the perfect latitudes to see the aurora. In fact, Hurtigruten is so confident you'll see the northern lights during the auroral season (Sept. 26 through March 31) that if they don't show up on a sailing of 11 days or more, the company will give you a free six- or seven-day cruise to try again. For the best odds of seeing the northern lights, we suggest the 12-day round-trip itinerary from Bergen up the coast of Norway and back.

That means Viking will alert you at any hour of the day – including the middle of the night – if the Aurora Borealis makes an appearance. A Northern Lights cruise, however, is different, in that it heads directly into the harsh cold of northern Norway, trading warm beaches and pool drinks for heavy parkas and hot toddies. As mentioned, the lights like to appear in the wee hours — particularly between 11 p.m. An advantage in Norway is that it's dark enough to see them for a longer period as you get into the fall and winter. Being an awe-inspiring sight, it’s only natural that the Northern Lights would play a large role in a wide variety of cultures.

FAQs on Northern Lights Cruises

We will then head south along the coast of Liverpool Land, with our passage dependent on ice conditions. After a leisurely breakfast, check-out of your room before commencing an excursion of Kirkenes and surrounds. Transfer to the pier for embarkation in the late afternoon, when you will have time to settle into your cabin before attending our mandatory safety briefings, and enjoy the thrill of departure as we ‘throw the lines’ and set sail. The mesmerising and otherworldly spectacle of the aurora borealis, also known as the Northern Lights, has captivated humanity for centuries. You’re also more likely to see them if you visit in colder months, as the most brilliant displays occur both in dark and cold environments. Because it’s a scientific phenomenon beyond the comprehension of modern science, you can only truly predict occurrences of the Northern Lights roughly two hours before they happen.

These Arctic regions, located near the magnetic poles, offer optimal conditions for observing the Northern Lights. Aurora Expeditions carefully plans itineraries to position their vessels in prime locations, away from light pollution, providing passengers with the best chances of witnessing the spectacular light display. If you don't have two or three weeks to take off work to go northern lights watching, consider Oceanwide Expeditions' eight-day aurora borealis sailings from Iceland to Greenland and back. The adventure begins in Akureyri, the unofficial capital of north Iceland, before heading for Greenland's breathtaking Scoresby Sund, the largest fjord system in the world.

Best Time to See Polar Bears in Svalbard – Wildlife Guide

There’s a chance of seeing the Northern Lights anywhere within the auroral zone – a 1,500-mile radius of the magnetic north pole. Based right at the heart of this zone is the Norwegian city of Tromsø, which is widely regarded as the world’s best place to see the Northern Lights when the conditions are right. And with stops at this dramatic destination on a Northern Lights holiday with P&O Cruises, you can go in search of the aurora borealis as you sail along the stunning Norwegian coastline.

If you’re travelling on a cruise holiday to see the Northern Lights in Norway, be sure to bring enough krone for the amount of time you’ll be there. Experience the true side of Greenland’s west coast with our partner Arctic Umiaq Line. Like us, they have a long history of serving local passengers and communities, and sail to places that most visitors to Greenland never see. Havila Voyages is so confident guests will see the Northern Lights on Nordic sailings between October and March, it offers a guarantee.

With longer hours with dark skies and clear night skies, the Westfjords and North Iceland are the best regions to head to if you want to catch a glimpse of the Northern Lights. There are many fantastic remote locations in South Iceland where you can witness the aurora, including the popular Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon. The Seltjarnarnes peninsula is a prime viewing area as there is minimal light pollution. There are also plenty of places near Reykjavík you can head to if you’re short on time, including Thingvellir National Park. While Greenland is one of the best countries in the world for witnessing the Northern Lights, getting there can be challenging and often what holds people back.

Embark on a nostalgic summertime voyage along the Norwegian coast up to the Svalbard archipelago at the edge of the world. For the first time, we sail to or from the capital Oslo, journeying between Norway’s southernmost point and its northernmost. Havila Voyages and HX both offer a Northern Lights promise on cruises that depart from the scenic town of Bergen, Norway. However, most Northern Lights cruises visit just Norway, Iceland, and Greenland because those countries have open waterways that aren’t frozen over.

The Cruise Ships With the Best and Worst Sanitation Scores in 2023

sick cruise ships

Public health officials track illnesses on cruise ships so “outbreaks are found and reported more quickly on a cruise ship than on land,” the C.D.C. said. Years before 2020 turned the world upside down, the cruise industry came under fire whenever ships reported outbreaks of norovirus, a common and highly contagious virus that causes gastrointestinal upset. One to keep an eye on is shigella, which the CDC notes has been behind GI outbreaks on cruise ships.

Norovirus

To do that, they use stronger solvents, like Microbac, chlorine bleach, hydrogen peroxide. Sick passengers and crew are quarantined in their rooms, typically for at least 2 days. When Norovirus outbreaks can't be contained, cruise lines might also pull the ship out of service for a few days for sanitizing. The following "health advisory" list of recommended actions is often issued during gastrointestinal illness outbreak or on embarkation day (of the next scheduled voyage). It has important suggestions on how to avoid spreading the cruise ship virus infection. CDC requests that cruise ships submit a cumulative ARI report (even if no ARI cases have occurred) preferably within 24 hours before arrival in the U.S. [7], and sooner if a voyage’s crew or passenger ARI attack rate reaches 3% [8].

– The Guest May Need Medical Centre Treatment

In late February, more than 300 people aboard a Princess Cruises ship fell ill with diarrhea and vomiting, according to the CDC, though the agency didn’t cite the cause of the illness that sickened the 284 passengers and 34 crew. The Ruby Princess increased disinfection and cleaning procedures in the wake of the outbreak. This came weeks after passengers on board a Florida-based cruise ship came down with an unknown illness. Passengers on the cruise ship reported symptoms of gastroenteritis, or the stomach flu, after setting off from Jacksonville.

Outbreak Control

If you are feeling sick before your voyage, do not travel and ask your cruise line about rescheduling or reimbursement options. If you feel sick during your voyage, report your symptoms to the ship’s medical center and follow their recommendations. Cruise ship operators should consider denying boarding for passengers who test positive for infectious viral etiologies during pre-embarkation screening, as well as those who tested positive for COVID-19 within 10 days before embarkation.

Managing Cruise Travelers with ARI and Contacts while on Board

Have you ever become nauseated, dizzy or physically ill while flying or on a train, small boat or long, winding car ride? “Handwashing, cleaning your stateroom, watching what you eat and how much you eat, and making sure that you stay hydrated will go a long way in preventing these illnesses, from you catching them even if they are there,” she says. Surfaces or objects that are contaminated with norovirus can be cleaned with a high-level disinfectant like bleach, per Ostrosky. You can also buy medicine in port, but foreign pharmacies might not carry the same brands you're used to. They also might not have the same regulations as at home and might not accept foreign prescriptions.

For the agency to report a cruise-ship outbreak, 3% or more of passengers or crew members must report symptoms of gastrointestinal illness, such as vomiting and diarrhea, to the ship's medical staff. During the most recent outbreak, a 14-day cruise aboard the Viking Neptune in June, slightly over 13% of passengers (110 of 838) reported being ill with predominant symptoms of abdominal cramps, vomiting, and diarrhea, according to the CDC. Most recently, a norovirus outbreak in June on the Viking Neptune sickened 110 passengers (over 13% of the ship's guests) and nine crew members with vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal cramps, according to the CDC. The CDC has tracked outbreaks of gastrointestinal illness on cruise ships through its Vessel Sanitation Program (VSP) since 1994. It's a very common, highly contagious, ruthlessly efficient and uncomfortably bad virus affecting the stomach and large intestines. Often called "stomach flu" (the med term is "Gastroenteritis") the infection results in massive vomiting and diarrhea.

Guidance for Cruise Ships on Management of Acute Respiratory Illness (ARI) due to Viral Infection

Should you require medical care in a port of call, services provided in foreign ports must often be paid in full by cash or credit card before you are discharged. Once you pay the cruise line and any other required providers, you should submit receipts and documentation to your health insurance provider to recoup whatever your insurance will pay for out-of-network emergency care. If you've purchased travel insurance, it will often cover the remaining amount. Most cruise ships will have one or two doctors and up to four nurses onboard to treat sick passengers. Medical staff must meet certain training requirements, but they do not have to be certified in the United States.

ABC News Live

About three percent of people aboard the ship are affected by the norovirus, according to the cruise company. Most hospital ships are navy vessels (operated by military forces) which are specifically built for use in war zones. The most severe outbreaks were reported in Brazil, with an alarming surge in newborns with microcephaly. If the mother is infected, the virus may cause microcephaly in newborns. This is a neurodevelopmental disorder - babies are born with an underdeveloped head.

For more information, read updated resources for clinicians and guidance on the medical evaluation and management of people with COVID-19, influenza, or RSV are available on CDC’s websites. [4] Back-to-back sailing refers to passengers who stay on board for two or more voyages. Data on this page are from ship surveillance reports and from CDC-led investigations.

According to the Cruise Lines International Association, cruise passenger volume is estimated to reach 106% of 2019 levels this year, with 31.5 million passengers expected to set sail. The ship left San Francisco for Honolulu on Wednesday and was traveling off the west coast of the United States on Thursday, according to the ship-tracking website Cruise Mapper. A lot of whether or not you'll feel ill depends on how calm the seas are and where on the ship you're located. If you think you might be susceptible to seasickness, choose a larger ship where you'll be less likely to feel the movement, and book a room on a middle deck, midship (not too far to the front or back). Make sure it's got a window or balcony that will allow you to stare at the horizon, which helps your body to regain its equilibrium. A good indicator of whether or not you'll be seasick is whether or not you've experienced motion sickness on other forms of transportation.

It is not yet known what caused the outbreak, but most instances of norovirus occur in food service settings like restaurants, according to the CDC. Search for medical assistance - consult the ship's physician if no actions provide relief. If the ship has a stop coming up, they may wait until they can get to a port. Coast Guard (or equivalent officials in other countries) are available to them, which can provide a helicopter evacuation, or by boat if they are closer to shore. Carnival Corp. has agreements with multiple university medical centers to conduct consultations with specialists. The ship includes multiple kitchens, grills and even an interactive space where guests can cook with Compton.

There are passenger testimonials about quarantined ships and how badly guests have been treated by the line. Virus outbreak news speaks of a lack of proper hygiene control, badly trained staff, bad ship management. The whole responsibility goes to the shipowner (cruise line company) and its management.

Another possibility is the cruise ship to cancel all the itinerary's foreign ports of call and to return to its US home-port before the end of the voyage. VSP (abbrev "Vessel Sanitation Program") monitors CDC's observations on illness patterns for GI (gastrointestinal) outbreaks on passenger shipping vessels (ferries and cruise ships). There have been 13 norovirus outbreaks on cruise ships since the start of the year, the most outbreaks the U.S. has witnessed since 2012, and more than there were in all of 2022. Routine vaccinations protect you from infectious diseases  that can spread quickly in groups of people.

VSP may also post information on gastrointestinal illness outbreaks of public health significance that do not necessarily meet the above criteria. Most large cruise ships are built with stabilizers to make the ride as smooth as possible. Even so, people who are prone to motion sickness can start to feel queasy onboard.

All of the current Oasis of the Seas passengers will receive a full refund, Royal Caribbean Cruises said in the statement. The Royal Caribbean advertises the Oasis of the Seas as one of the world’s largest ships. Norovirus is the leading cause of foodborne illness in the U.S., according to CDC. Alan Thomas is currently aboard the ship with his spouse and two friends.

Read on to discover some common illnesses you can pick up on a cruise — and what you can do to help keep yourself healthy on your next getaway. “Norovirus is one of the few viruses that doesn’t get deactivated by alcohol. You actually need to use soap and water to physically destroy it and remove it from your hands,” Ostrosky previously told TODAY.com.
